Nepal-China Disaster: China Warns of Second Flood Risk as Barrier Lake Threatens Breach Following Nepal-Tibet Disaster
In late August 2026, catastrophic flash flooding struck the China-Nepal border region. Triggered by a massive glacial and rock collapse on Mount Langtang Lirung in Tibet, the initial surge devastated infrastructure along the border, including the Gyirong Port, and surged down the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. The disaster resulted in hundreds of casualties and left more than 1,000 people missing across both countries.
Formation of the Barrier Lake:
Following the main flood event, massive debris and mudslides dammed the river flow near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers. China’s Ministry of Water Resources identified an impounded barrier lake holding approximately 2 million cubic meters of trapped water. By late August 2026, the barrier lake began naturally breaching and draining. Authorities noted that the drainage occurred gradually rather than through a single sudden, catastrophic outburst, helping reduce the immediate severity of a secondary flood wave and allowing rescue operations to slowly resume under close monitoring.
