Krishna Janmashtami 2026

Krishna Janmashtami 2026 marks the 5,253rd birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Observed on the Ashtami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, the primary celebration falls on Friday, September 4, 2026 (Smarta tradition), while some Vaishnava and ISKCON traditions observe it on Saturday, September 5, 2026.

Key Aspects of the Celebration
Significance: Janmashtami celebrates the divine birth of Lord Krishna in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva to end the tyranny of King Kamsa and restore righteousness (dharma).

Rituals & Fasting: Devotees observe a day-long fast, chant bhajans, and decorate household shrines with a jhula (cradle) for Bal Gopal. The ritual bath (abhishekam) and midnight puja (Nishita Kaal) take place around midnight, marking the moment of Krishna's birth.

Offerings: Offerings of makhan-mishri (butter and sugar candy), panchamrit, and various milk sweets are made to the deity before breaking the fast.

Dahi Handi & Nandotsav: On September 5, 2026, grand Dahi Handi events take place, particularly in Maharashtra and Gujarat, where groups of govindas form human pyramids to break curd pots suspended high above the ground.
