On Friday night, May 8, 2026, a highly unusual and fatal incident occurred at Denver International Airport (DEN) involving a Frontier Airlines flight. While not a "crash" in the traditional sense of a plane falling from the sky, the event resulted in a high-speed collision on the runway.  

​The Incident

​Flight Details: Frontier Airlines Flight 4345, an Airbus A321 bound for Los Angeles with 231 people on board (224 passengers and 7 crew).  

​The Collision: During its takeoff roll at approximately 11:19 p.m., the aircraft struck a pedestrian who had jumped the airport’s perimeter fence and ran onto Runway 17L.  

​Impact & Fire: The pilot immediately aborted takeoff, reporting to air traffic control: "We just hit somebody. We have an engine fire." Reports indicate the individual was struck at high speed and may have been partially ingested by one of the engines, sparking a brief fire and filling the cabin with smoke.  

​Evacuation and Casualties

​Fatalities: The unidentified pedestrian was killed instantly.  

​Injuries: Twelve passengers reported minor injuries during the emergency evacuation, which was conducted via the aircraft's inflatable slides on the runway. Five of those individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment.  

​Response: The Denver Fire Department quickly extinguished the engine fire. Passengers were eventually bused back to the terminal and most were rebooked on a different flight the following morning.  

​Investigation

​The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the FAA are currently investigating the incident alongside local law enforcement. Key areas of focus include:  

​Security Breach: How the trespasser managed to scale the perimeter fence and reach an active runway undetected (the airport noted the fence line appeared intact after the event).

​Safety Protocols: U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that local law enforcement is leading the investigation into the "deliberate" security breach.  

​Runway 17L remained closed for several hours following the incident but has since reopened for normal operations.
