Lohri

Date: Tuesday, 13 January 2026

Lohri is a midwinter folk &  harvest festival that marks the passing of the winter solstice and the end of winter. It is a traditional welcome of longer days and the sun's journey to the Northern Hemisphere.

Lohri is a vibrant Punjabi folk festival celebrated primarily in Northern India (Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh) to mark the end of the peak winter season and the arrival of longer, warmer days. It traditionally falls on January 13th every year, just a day before Makar Sankranti.
Significance of the Festival
Harvest Celebration: Lohri is essentially a harvest festival that marks the ripening of the Rabi (winter) crops, specifically sugarcane, wheat, and mustard. It is a time for farmers to offer thanks to the Sun God (Surya) and Fire (Agni) for a bountiful harvest.
The Legend of Dulla Bhatti: The festival is deeply tied to the folklore of Dulla Bhatti, a legendary hero known as the "Robin Hood of Punjab." He famously rescued young girls from being sold into slavery and arranged their marriages. Most Lohri songs, including the famous "Sunder Mundariye," are sung in his honor.
New Beginnings: It is considered particularly auspicious for newlyweds and newborn babies, as it symbolizes fertility, joy, and the beginning of a prosperous life.
Key Traditions and Rituals
The Bonfire: In the evening, families and neighbors gather around a large communal bonfire. This fire symbolizes the Sun bringing warmth and the "burning away" of the old year's gloom and negativity.
Offerings (Prasad): People perform Parikrama (circumambulation) around the fire and throw offerings like sesame seeds (til), jaggery (gur), popcorn, and peanuts into the flames while praying for prosperity.
Music and Dance: The atmosphere is electric with the beats of the dhol. Men perform the energetic Bhangra, while women dance the Gidda.
Traditional Food: A classic Lohri feast is incomplete without Sarson da Saag (mustard greens) and Makki di Roti (cornbread), along with sweets like Gajak and Rewri.

Lohri is an optional holiday.
