BJP Big Victory in West Bengal & Othe States:
The May 2026 Assembly Election results have marked a significant turning point in Indian politics, with the BJP making historic gains in the East and maintaining its dominance in the Northeast.
The ruling BJP-led NDA has secured a historic third consecutive term in Assam & In Kerala, United Democratic Front has swept poll with 99 seats, signalling a decisive return to power.
Here is a brief note on the BJP's performance across key states:
1. West Bengal: A Historic Breakthrough
For the first time in history, the BJP has crossed the majority mark in West Bengal, ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The Tally: The BJP secured over 200 seats in the 294-member assembly.
Key Victory: In a massive symbolic blow, Suvendu Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her stronghold of Bhabanipur by a margin of over 15,000 votes.
Driving Factors: Analysts attribute this to a consolidation of the opposition vote, a split in the minority vote bank, and significant gains in North Bengal and the Jangalmahal region.
2. Assam: The NDA Hat-trick
In Assam, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) scripted a record-breaking "hat-trick" by retaining power for a third consecutive term.
The Tally: The alliance won 101 out of 126 seats, far exceeding the majority mark of 64.
Leadership: The victory solidifies Himanta Biswa Sarma’s position as a dominant regional leader.
Outcome: The BJP alone won 81 seats, while its allies, the AGP and BPF, contributed 10 seats each.
3. Performance in Other States
The 2026 elections also saw the BJP expanding its footprint in southern territories where it previously struggled:
Kerala: The BJP recorded its best-ever performance in the state, winning 3 seats (Nemom, Kazhakoottam, and Chathannoor). High-profile leaders like Rajeev Chandrasekhar and V. Muraleedharan secured victories, marking a major breakthrough in the Thiruvananthapuram region.
Tamil Nadu: While actor Vijay’s new party (TVK) emerged as a massive force, the BJP-led NDA (in alliance with AIADMK) is positioned to become the principal opposition, displacing the DMK-led bloc in many areas.
Puducherry: The BJP-allied AINRC has managed to hold onto power, maintaining the NDA's presence in the Union Territory.
In brief the victory in West Bengal, the BJP and its allies now govern 22 states across India, completing what the party calls the "Anga-Banga-Kalinga" arc (referring to the eastern coast of India).
